Colour of Music
Based in Charleston since 2013, Colour of Music Festival has brought international, national and regional classically trained Black musicians to fill the streets and halls of Charleston with musical sounds that have been a part of the world stage for more than 300 years.
The festival showcases the talent of prodigiously gifted classical musicians of African descent, and spotlights the influence of Black classical composers and performers on American and world culture.
Recipient of the prestigious 2022 South Arts Southern Cultural Treasures award, the festival also travels across the U.S. with performance events in major hubs including Washington, D.C., New York’s Carnegie Hall, Houston, Atlanta and Nashville, to name a few.
“SC Public Radio is the engine that brings quality classical and choral music to the state,” says Lee Pringle, Founder and President of the Colour of Music.
“The festival has been featured regularly on both SC Public Radio’s Sonatas and Soundscapes and Performance Today at NPR. Bringing our performances to such a wide statewide audience has done wonders to growing our concert audience and building a base of loyal supporters these past 11 years.”
The 2024 Colour of Music Festival returns to Charleston February 5–8 in honor of Black History Month featuring leading Black artists from France, Britain, Colombia, the Caribbean, and the U.S. performing orchestral works, chamber, piano, organ and vocal recitals in intimate settings.
