Baron Von Hotair (1974) | Sandlapper's Corner

Kaltura

In this adventure, we find South Carolina's official Wind Direction checker, Baron Von Hotair, navigating across the state in a hot air balloon, describing what he sees.

As he flies over the state checking the wind patterns, the Baron re-introduces concepts of maps, all the while trying to reorient some birds who are flying against the wind. Baron talks about the 3 land form regions that he had seen in a book about South Carolina and these were the Up Country, Sand Hills, and the Low Country. He describes each area and why they are so named. While in the Up Country and dodging mountain tops in the balloon, he points out Sassafras Mountain, Caesar's Head, Table Rock, and talks about the clear mountain streams. We get a glimpse of a power plant that uses the water to produce electricity.

Baron describes the 3 main river systems in the state and also talks about the natural and manmade lakes. He flies over the rolling hills of the Up Country with its red clay soil and its rivers, which are rocky and shallow. At the Fall Line, the rivers become less rocky and more navigable. Here he also describes features of the Sandhills.

Baron Von Hotair then swoops down to describe the marshlands and sea islands where he also talks about cotton and rice that had been grown in the area.

Sandlapper’s Corner was a children's educational program that began airing on SCETV in the 1970s. Produced by Dr. Sandra G. Thomas the show was about South Carolina—its people and places, its present and past.
