Marian Wright Edelman has dedicated her life to advancing civil rights and children’s rights.

Born in South Carolina in 1939, she was inspired by her father to pursue education despite adversity. After becoming the first African American woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar, Edelman founded the Children's Defense Fund in 1973 to advocate for policies benefiting disadvantaged children. She helped establish Head Start and influenced reforms to foster care, childcare, and protections for abused and homeless youth.

Her work continues to uplift youth and promote equality.
