Jobman Caravan: Nursing Occupations (1981) | ETV Classics

In 1981, this episode of Jobman Caravan focused on the growing demand for nursing careers, which accounted for over half the total number of health service employees. Meet a variety of professionals who work in different roles of nursing, including nursing technicians, licensed practical nurses, and registered nurses.

The largest group of nursing personnel are nursing technicians who play a crucial role in patient care. They perform routine tasks, such as helping patients get out of bed, assisting with transporting patients from one room to another, sterile dressings, and more. This allows registered nurses and licensed practical nurses time to focus on more complex responsibilities.  To become a nursing technician, one must complete a nursing program at an approved nursing school.

Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) work closely with patients, providing essential care and support. They work in various settings, including hospitals, clinics, and doctor's offices. LPNs monitor patient health, administer medications, and educate patients on maintaining their health. For this career path, the requirements include a high school diploma, passing the entrance exam, and completing an approved practical nursing program.

Nursing student Julie Walker states, "You can't just memorize. You really have to have some of that knowledge within you because you're going to be learning how to apply it to everyday situations."

LPNs work in medical settings usually under the supervision of a registered nurse. Registered nurses (RNs) are highly trained professionals who engage in patient care, administer medications, provide patient education, and advocate for patients with physicians. They also handle paperwork and may be in charge of a unit or floor. Focusing on math and science in high school and college are essential for those who want to become RNs. To complete requirements, they must pass state board exams.

Registered nurse Yvonne Jenkins dives into some of the challenges for nursing professionals like pay, stress, and the demanding work hours (including weekends and holidays). It's strongly encouraged that interested individual have a strong desire to help people.

Hosted by Bill Terrell, Jobman Caravan garnered SCETV its first Emmy Award in 1969, just one year after the show premiered. The show was groundbreaking and educated audiences about career opportunities and job interview techniques, traveled to a different town every week with a mobile TV unit, and featured popular musical acts.
