The 2021 Telehealth Pioneer Award was presented to Dr. Michael Lyons during the 9th Annual Telehealth Summit of South Carolina held virtually in November.
Lyons is the director of clinical services and associate clinical geneticist at the Greenwood Genetic Center. His peers call him a leader in the field of telehealth because he teaches others what he has learned from his own experiences with tele-genetics.
“Dr. Lyons’ work in telehealth is critical for genetics care in South Carolina,” said Dr. Steve Skinner, director of the Greenwood Genetic Center.
Nationally there’s inadequate workforce to meet the demands of genetics in medicine and healthcare today, according to Dr. Skinner. But using telehealth to connect with patients through a virtual visit allows increased access to care in a way that is more efficient for the families and healthcare providers across the state.
