November Honorees – Nathaniel and Viola Stewart
Nathaniel and Viola Stewart were a trailblazing couple who left an enduring mark in African American history. They met on a blind date in 1945, and after falling in love, were married for more than 50 years.
Viola Duvall Stewart, born June 30, 1919, in Charleston, S.C., was an unsung educational justice advocate and civil rights pioneer. She earned a B.S. degree in chemistry in 1941 from Howard University, where Nobel Peace Prize winner Ralph Bunche was one of her instructors. While a teacher at Burke High School in Charleston, Viola was recruited by the South Carolina NAACP to be the plaintiff in an African American teachers’ equalization salary case. Her case went to trial in 1944 and she was represented by NAACP Chief Counsel Thurgood Marshall with federal judge J. Waties Waring presiding over the case. In less than 15 minutes, without either side making an argument, the case was decided in favor of the plaintiff, Viola Duvall. The case, Duvall v. J.F. Seignous et al., led to other lawsuits that challenged inequities in African American teacher salaries across South Carolina.
Later in Viola’s career, she became an itinerant special education instructor with visually impaired children in the Philadelphia, Pa. public schools. She retired in 1981. She was a Charter Life member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where she served as Epistoleus and delegate to the 1944 regional conference. She later became the sorority’s Philacter or corresponding secretary. Mrs. Stewart passed away on December 10, 2010.
Nathaniel C. Stewart, Viola’s husband, was born July 8, 1922 in Ft. Motte, S.C. He earned the rank of Second Lieutenant, in the 99th Pursuit Squadron of the United States Army Air Corps, as a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen. He was an integral part of the successful effort that fought and defeated foreign fascism and racial segregation in the United States military. After his discharge from the Corps in 1946, he went to work at the Philadelphia General Hospital as a staff pharmacist. Once promoted to Director of Pharmacy, he was designated as the first African American to hold a senior administration position at the hospital. Nathaniel was a Lifetime Member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Mr. Stewart passed away on April 6, 2000.
Participants in the 1963 March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” address, the Stewarts remained active in the civil rights movement as NAACP Life Members. In 2010, their lifetime commitment to justice and equality were recognized by the Honorable James E. Clyburn in the Congressional Record.
Presented through a partnership between the South Carolina Department of Education and South Carolina ETV.

National Saxophone Day – Nov. 6
B.S. Plair of Rock Hill, South Carolina, served for the Montford Point Marines in 1945, until he was honorably discharged in 1946. The Montford Point Marines were based in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and were the first African American Marines to serve in the military, following an executive order from President Franklin Roosevelt in 1941 that required the armed services to recruit and enlist African Americans. In 2012, B.S. Plair was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, which is the nation’s highest civilian honor. B.S. Plair has a passion for music and, during his spare time in the military, he would practice his clarinet or saxophone. He has since instilled his love for music in his children. One of his children, Bobby Plair, Jr., is now a counselor at York Technical College in Rock Hill. Bobby Plair, Jr. directs Black History Through Music, an annual educational event held at the college. B.S. Plair has participated for “about 20 years, when they started this Black History program for music.”
Sonatas and Soundscapes explores the diverse and colorful range of classical (and not-so-classical) music. Every weekday host Bradley Fuller programs instrumental music from history’s repertoire—everything from baroque to experimentalism. Originally from Greenwood, South Carolina, Bradley Fuller has maintained a deep interest in classical music since the age of six. With piano lessons throughout grade school and involvement in marching and concert bands on the saxophone, Bradley further developed musical abilities as well as an appreciation for the importance of arts education.
National Bison Day – Nov. 7
The site includes one of the only zoos in Charleston. The zoo exhibits animals that were indigenous to South Carolina in 1670 like puma, bear, bison, and elk. These are animals that people don't associate with South Carolina.
The Clovis people, named for a town near an archeological site in New Mexico, lived in South Carolina and much of the eastern and western United States around 13,000 years ago, near the end of the last Ice Age. These fearless hunters attacked their prey in groups. They hunted megafauna: bison, mastodon, and mammoth. Clovis used a characteristic fluted point, grooved on both sides so it could be attached, or hafted, to a shaft.

In this show, we will also take a look at how cost effective it is to use recycled products. Reef-X documents how decommissioned military equipment is cleaned, carefully prepared, and then placed in the ocean bed to build reefs off the coast of Beaufort, South Carolina.
A marine artificial reef is an added substrate positioned on a flat, featureless, sandy ocean bottom. The reef is totally natural, with the exception of the structure on which it grows. Natural reefs occur on rocky outcroppings, such as limestone ledges, and are found in small areas. Artificial reefs are created using recycled sunken ships, barges, boats, and bridges. Marine organisms attach to the structures and, after a few years, it is hard to tell the difference between a natural and an artificial reef.
For Sylvester Oestricher, working for a company that is looking to the future is important. As a roll cart driver, Oestricher collects recycle from area schools and businesses. His job is not only important because of what he does but it was also important to him to preserve the planet for his children.
