Remembering Congressman John Spratt | The Big Picture (2007) | ETV Classics

A look back at Congressman John Spratt, who passed away on December 14, 2024. The documentary was produced for The Big Picture by John Bullington and hosted by Alex Sanders.

John Spratt, his wife, Jane Stacy Spratt, and close, longtime friends and professionals who worked with Spratt on various initiatives, reflect on his time in Congress. Constituent service was a high priority. Spratt and others involved in the case recall how important the Catawba land claim case was to the area and its residents. It was settled in 1993. Spratt warned Chief Gilbert Blue that they would need to remove portions to get it through Congress. It took a full five years and Spratt considers it the single biggest constituent accomplishment of his career. The work to rebuild Shaw Air Force Base was also of great importance. Keeping it competitive with other bases was key in accomplishing this, year in, year out.

Even though the area he serves has become more conservative over time, and the far-right Republicans do not support him, it is hard to find people who can dispute the hard work he has done and the way he has brought both sides together to accomplish the important work to be done.

John Spratt’s obituary may be found here.
