Mother Thecla & Helena | Original SC

In the Sand Hills of South Carolina, on 60 acres of forest land, the Saints Mary and Martha Orthodox Monastery is home to Orthodox nuns, Mother Helena and Abess Mother Thecla. Their monastic lifestyle is centered around prayer, work, and hospitality.

For three decades these nuns have lived in a doublewide trailer on the property located just outside of Wagener. But now a new building is being erected that will house up to 19 nuns once completed.

The monastery is independent and supports itself through candlemaking. It is one of only two orthodox monasteries in South Carolina and the only monastery that supports itself by selling hand-dipped beeswax candles.

For visitors seeking quiet reflection and prayer, the monastery is a spiritual oasis. Throughout the property, walking trails lead visitors through the woods and gardens. There are several places to pray before an icon of Christ or a cross. And a small hermitage offers a place of solitude, away from the noisiness and stress of the world.

Divine liturgy service is held the second Saturday of every month at the Monastery. Worshipers typically fast prior to a liturgy service, which celebrates the eucharist, or holy communion, through prayer and music.

Original SC invites you to explore the Palmetto State through inspiring stories of everyday people. From cities to serene rural landscapes, each narrative showcases the diverse experiences and resilience of South Carolinians. These individuals share their triumphs, challenges, and unique perspectives, reflecting the vibrant culture, traditions, and community spirit that define South Carolina today.
