On this segment of Sandlapper's Corner, we learn about explorers and settlers and how much we learn about them from the way they dressed, the way they worked and the way they traveled. Our host notes that history is the memory of mankind and goes on to discuss more about what history is. She also discusses time as pertains to years, decades and centuries.
The exploits of earlier explorers, such as Leif Erikson, were not documented in writing, and historians don’t know for sure what he had explored and as a result, he has gotten no credit.
Explorers who landed in South Carolina, such as Lucas Vasquez de Ayllon, Jean Ribaut and Pedro Menendez de Aviles are discussed in this lesson. Their early settlements did not last long, and it was not until the English arrived that permanent settlements began to thrive.
We learn about the eight Lords Proprietors and the conditions on the ships upon which the early settlers traveled. Historic Jamestown and relationships with the Native Americans are discussed.
Sandlapper’s Corner was a children's educational program that began airing on SCETV in the 1970s. Produced by Dr. Sandra G. Thomas, the show was about South Carolina—its people and places, its present and past.
