On our next Sandlapper's Corner, we take a virtual field trip to learn about agriculture in the State of South Carolina. Young Allen Jones dreams of becoming a farmer, and he visits Mr. Thomas, the local County Farm Agent to learn more about a farmer's life and what it takes to become one.
After getting permission from his parents to go on a field trip with Mr. Thomas, they visit a couple of farms in the area. Mr. Thomas explains what crops most farmers raise in South Carolina, which include not only produce for the family table, but tobacco and chickens, as well.
As they tour some farms, the agent talks about the economics involved for the farmer to break even and about the three money crops in the state which are tobacco, soy beans, and cotton.
Agent Thomas talks about the machinery that is used to plant, as well as harvest, the crops and the importance of scientific advances and technology. In addition to vegetables, they talk about other crops such as fruit, poultry, pork, and beef.
Allen decides that he is glad that he will have to wait before he becomes a farmer because he has much to learn about crops and farming first.
Sandlapper’s Corner was a children's educational program that began airing on SCETV in the 1970s. Produced by Dr. Sandra G. Thomas the show was about South Carolina—its people and places, its present and past.
