My week was filled with meaningful connections, invaluable lessons, and moments of gratitude as I had the chance to engage with the future leaders of our community and witness the incredible work being done in education.

Sharing my journey with future trailblazers

On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, I had the privilege of speaking with students in the C.A. Johnson High School J.A.G. (Jobs for America's Graduates) program. Sharing my story—from my roots as a proud graduate of Richland School District One and Columbia High School to becoming the social media manager for SCETV and Public Radio—was an absolute honor.

C.A. Johnson's J.A.G. program stands out for its commitment to holistic development, featuring Mindful Monday, Technology Tuesday, and Wellness Wednesday initiatives. These programs are equipping students with not just academic skills but life skills, fostering personal growth and well-being. Engaging with these curious, driven students reminded me of the importance of resilience, determination, and dreaming big.

Stepping into leadership at W.S. Sandel Elementary

On Thursday, November 21, 2024, I had the privilege of serving as Principal for a Day at W.S. Sandel Elementary. Walking in, I was immediately struck by the warmth of the staff and the eagerness of the students. Shadowing Principal Claudia Brooks-McCallum was eye-opening as I witnessed the dedication required to oversee 500 students, teachers, support staff, and administrators while shaping young minds, some as young as three years old.

Principal McCallum's leadership embodies patience, creativity, and a deep sense of purpose. Whether coordinating daily operations or fostering an environment where both students and staff can thrive, her work highlights the vital role principals play in education.

Lessons learned

These experiences reminded me of the transformative power of education. As someone whose own journey was shaped by this community, it was deeply fulfilling to give back to the district that has meant so much to me. To parents, educators, and the public: our schools need your support, whether through mentorship, classroom engagement, or simply showing gratitude to the teachers and leaders shaping our future.

Thank you C.A. Johnson High School and W.S. Sandel Elementary for allowing me to be part of your world, if only briefly. Your passion, dedication, and energy inspire me to continue striving for excellence and to give back to the community that shaped me. Here's to empowering the next generation and celebrating the incredible work happening in our schools every day.
