Chartres Cathedral | ETV Classics

Chartres Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres in Paris, France, is the only remaining Medieval cathedral in Europe. A UNESCO heritage site, the cathedral is a popular destination for visitors.

When Malcolm Miller was a young man, he wrote his honor's thesis on the topic of Chartres Cathedral and became totally absorbed in the history and beauty, so much so that the cathedral became the subject of his lifelong study. Eventually, he became the official lecturer for Chartres. At the time of this interview in 1984, he was engaged in lecturing across the country about the cathedral, sharing his extensive collection of slides of Chartres.

Miller observed that Chartres is like a library in stained glass and sculpture. During those early days, only the clergy could read the Bible and the worshipful could read the stories as depicted in the glorious stained-glass windows.

Join us in this very special ETV Classic as Miller shows a selection of his gorgeous slides and explains the significance of each one. He elaborates on the cathedral’s construction, medieval history, architecture, and art, including the original stained-glass windows.

The slideshow continues with a reading of a Bible story featured on one of the stained-glass windows, chronicling the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy of the incarnation of Jesus Christ, and the early years of Jesus’ life.
