The Rick Foster Primary Care Telehealth Champion Award was presented to Dr. Danette McAlhaney during the12th Annual Telehealth Summit of South Carolina held last month in Hilton Head. Dr. McAlhaney is a family practitioner and owner of Bamberg Family Practice in Bamberg, South Carolina.
The Rick Foster Primary Care Telehealth Champion Award recognizes an individual champion in the area of primary care. The purpose of this award is to recognize individuals who have overcome significant barriers or developed revolutionary processes that benefit the communities they serve in South Carolina.
Dr. McAlhaney is known for her passion to provide comprehensive health care services to her rural community and the surrounding counties. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, she began providing school-based telehealth services to students and was not afraid to take a chance on trying out the new technology and a new way of serving patients. After the pandemic hit, her office was ready to expand telehealth services to all patients.
“Dr. McAlhaney has lived and worked in a rural community her entire life, said Kathy Schwarting, MHA, chief executive officer at Palmetto Care Connections and co-chair of the South Carolina Telehealth Alliance. “She is very infused in the community, understands her patients and the lifestyle that they have to live in to be in a rural community. She has gone above and beyond to offer better access to healthcare through telehealth.”
Palmetto Care Connections is the host of the Annual Telehealth Summit of South Carolina. The Telehealth Summit brings together leaders and professionals interested in utilizing telehealth to increase access to health care.
