Last summer, as a national reckoning around racial injustice took place, a statue of John C. Calhoun was removed in downtown Charleston, just a block from Mother Emanuel AME Church, where a white supremacist killed nine black parishioners in 2015. In a state filled with monuments, memorials and buildings named after controversial historical figures, we discuss the challenge in balancing historical recognition with celebrating what was a painful past for so many.
