Carolina Classrooms: Teach Like Finland

ETV’s Carolina Classrooms will feature a special that looks into best practices as we continue to address key issues facing our South Carolina schools. Carolina Classrooms is ETV’s monthly educational series for teachers, parents, and all citizens invested in the education of our children.

Finland’s educational system is having immense success with teacher retention and student academic achievement. SCETV, in partnership with the Riley Institute, visited Finland to delve deeper into their best practices as part of a broader conversation about the challenges currently facing South Carolina schools.

Guests on the Carolina Classrooms program include Finnish parent Janna Sovari and Marc Dyer, a Blythewood High School Social Studies teacher.

In addition, we will share reflections from South Carolina educators and supporters who went on the trip, including the following:

  • Michael Svec, Professor of Education at Furman University
  • Jacki Martin, Deputy Director of the Riley Institute at Furman University
  • Dr. Danny Merck, Superintendent of the School District of Pickens County
  • Kristin Cuilla, Senior Director, District & School Development, New Tech Network
  • Representative Neal Collins (R) Pickens

Join us for this edition of Carolina Classrooms as we share what was learned during the visit, and explore if South Carolina should, Teach Like Finland.
