These past two weeks have been a whirlwind. We've been traveling all around South Carolina and gathering footage for the upcoming show By the River. Imelda Golden and I will be assisting Dr. Caroline Sawyer in the show’s post-production. The series will feature local authors being interviewed about their books and the significance of the Lowcountry as a backdrop in literature.
Charleston was our first stop for B-roll. One of the authors featured on the new series is Lauren Rule-Maxwell, who runs a children’s writing camp at the Citadel. We spent a morning and afternoon there, getting footage of the kids and their poetry projects. Before we left, we even got to meet the Poet Laureate of Charleston, Marcus Amaker. He shared his book Empath with us and recited a few of his favorite poems for the show’s credit sequences. His work is incredibly moving, and it was heartwarming to see how much the kids looked up to him.
The rest of that week, we spent in and around Beaufort, from downtown to the Waterfront, and out to Hunting Island. We took with us several of the books that will be featured on the show and shot footage of them by fountains, on the beach, and even on the Beaufort Bridge. This past Tueday, for the first time ever, I went kayaking and shot some lovely footage of the rivers and the natural wildlife. Birds, fish, and dolphins made their appearances just feet away from my little boat, and it was breathtaking to see them all up-close. The Lowcountry is so beautiful, and I can’t wait to see what it has in store!
