A stroke is a "brain attack." It occurs when blood flow to an area of the brain is cut off. It can happen to anyone at any time. In South Carolina, thousands of people die from stroke every year. The problem is aggravated by the fact that many hospitals, especially in rural areas of South Carolina, do not have a neurologist on staff. In order to increase access to quality stroke care, the South Carolina Telehealth Alliance works with hospitals across the state to implement tele-stroke equipment. Tele-stroke, the use of telehealth specifically for stroke care, allows for better diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients in remote locations. Yet, positive outcomes cannot be achieved without a great deal of collaboration and teamwork. For stroke treatment, every minute counts and all hands are important.
