South Carolina ETV and Public Radio (SCETV) is thrilled to announce Darryl Huger has joined the SCETV team as news director. With more than 30 years of experience, Huger brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep passion for storytelling to SCETV. In this role, he oversees news operations across radio, television and online platforms, supporting SCETV’s commitment to transparent and comprehensive news coverage.
Huger’s distinguished career spans decades in broadcast news, with leadership roles across South Carolina and beyond. Most recently, Huger served as senior communications specialist in corporate communications for Dominion Energy. During his three-year tenure as news director for WACH Fox in Columbia, Huger led coverage of the historic Flood of 2015 which included launching a new 5 p.m. newscast to provide vital updates and resources for residents.
Huger’s first news director role was at WTVM/WXTX in Columbus, Georgia, where he managed the ABC (WTVM) and Fox (WXTX) news teams while also supervising a news bureau based at Auburn University. Huger served six years as assistant news director at WCSC Live 5 News in Charleston, where he helped shape newsroom operations at one of the Lowcountry’s leading stations.
Huger's deep connection to WIS News 10 in Columbia spans three separate tenures, each contributing to his growth and understanding of the news industry. He began his career there as a news photographer in the 1980s, before being promoted to assignment manager. During these early years, Huger played a pivotal role in key moments of the station's history, such as the launch of WIS’s first satellite truck, Newstar 10, and working alongside legendary meteorologist Jim Gandy during the landfall of Hurricane Hugo in South Carolina. Huger later returned to WIS as managing editor, where he oversaw content and newsroom operations from 2000 to 2005.
A native of Charleston, Darryl Huger is a graduate of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of South Carolina. His career has been marked by numerous high-profile interviews with celebrities such as Muhammad Ali, Ella Fitzgerald, Little Richard, Jayne Kennedy, Johnny Cochran, Shirley Chisholm, Johnny Cash, Nancy Wilson and Maya Angelou.
Huger’s appointment marks a homecoming as his career with SCETV began in 1985 when ETV Upstate hired him as its chief photographer, where he later became a senior producer. In his current role, Huger oversees news operations across SCETV's radio, television and online platforms, ensuring engagement, collaboration and high-quality content delivery. His responsibilities include managing SC Public Radio's Morning Edition and All Things Considered local coverage, as well as directing broadcast and online news reporting. Huger will work closely with SCETV’s Director of Transparency, enhancing public access to information through livestreams and other multimedia efforts. Additionally, he will support SCEIN, the network’s weather service, and coordinate news coverage with key programs to provide comprehensive and engaging news coverage for audiences across the state.
In 2024, SCETV strengthened its news operations, reflecting the network’s dedication to providing timely, accurate and impactful local coverage across multiple platforms. This effort emphasizes a collaborative, multi-platform approach to storytelling, ensuring audiences can engage with SCETV’s news content seamlessly. With this unified approach, SCETV aims to be a leader in public service journalism, spotlighting the voices and stories that make South Carolina unique.
