Robert Lewis: Music Director
In one of the historic birthplaces of jazz, the Charleston Jazz Orchestra (CJO) is the most visible part of Charleston Jazz, a nonprofit organization that aims to celebrate the legacy and ensure a future for this iconic music in the Lowcountry.
Established in 2008, Charleston Jazz has earned a reputation for presenting, producing and advocating for all things jazz and the artists who bring this music to life in dynamic ways. The nonprofit organization manages the CJO, the Charleston Jazz Festival and the Charleston Jazz Academy.
A concert big band, the CJO is dedicated to presenting high-quality shows to appreciative audiences. The group’s performances typically feature a theme and, within that theme, a mix of classic big band repertoire and brand-new compositions and arrangements. Performances also often include guest appearances from world-class musicians.
The CJO’s music director, Robert Lewis, who served as the group’s original lead saxophonist before being appointed to his current position three years ago, says the organization includes South Carolina ETV and Public Radio in its marketing strategy because of audience overlap and shared values.
“Our audiences both appreciate accessible, quality and engaging programming,” said Lewis. “Additionally, we value the quality of programs SCETV produces and recognize the positive impact they have on the quality of life in our community.”
