“Beyond Barbados” documentary to premiere on SCETV June 20

Beyond Barbados

COLUMBIA, S.C. – “Beyond Barbados: The Carolina Connection,” a new, one-hour documentary film exploring the history and cultural connections between Barbados and South Carolina, will premiere Thursday, June 20 at 8 p.m. on South Carolina Educational Television (SCETV).

Part of the network’s “Carolina Stories” series, “Beyond Barbados: The Carolina Connection” traces the extensive ties between the colonization of South Carolina and the West Indian island. Written, produced and directed by Sanford Adams, the project was supported by a grant from the South Carolina National Heritage Corridor and features illustrations by James H. Palmer Jr.

In conjunction with Thursday’s broadcast, SCETV and the ETV Endowment are hosting a screening event at 6:30 p.m. at Middleton Place in Charleston. Although it’s already sold out, the event provides a perfect setting to celebrate the strong Barbadian influence in the Lowcountry.

In addition to its June 20 premiere, the documentary is also airing June 22 on ETV World at 3 p.m.; June 23 on SCETV at 7 p.m.; and June 24 on the S.C. Channel at 8 p.m.

The documentary is also being versioned for classroom use and will be available on Knowitall.org later this month. Further, SCETV has developed one-to-one lesson plans to support the documentary, and those are available now on the network’s LearningWhy platform. SCETV will also host educator workshops throughout the state. The first workshop will take place August 1 at Charles Towne Landing in Charleston, S.C., and additional workshops will take place the week of November 18. These one-day sessions will introduce innovative ways to integrate Barbadian culture into South Carolina classrooms. Stay tuned for more information and details on how to register for these workshops.
