The telehealth program at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) earned national recognition as a telehealth center for excellence. It’s one of two such centers in the country. The designation is given to programs that operate in mostly rural areas known for prevalence of chronic diseases.
MUSC provides telehealth services for routine appointments in places like schools and nursing homes, as well as critical care services in the Tele-ICU and renowned Tele-Stroke programs. MUSC Telehealth leaders say the center is growing. Dr. Dee Ford says MUSC completed more than 200,000 tele-interactions in 2017.
While program administrators are celebrating the national honor, they said their work is just getting started. Dr. Ford said MUSC’s goal is to be a model for other university hospitals across the country.
