Upstate South Carolina is littered with the remains of many beautiful textile mills that helped to build the community. One such mill with a particularly interesting story is Glendale Mill, known today as Glendale Shoals.
Dr. B.G. Stephens, a historical expert and native of Glendale, spoke with us about the rich history and social significance of the Glendale Mill. We discussed the history of the mill, as well as current investments by Wofford College to start an Ecological Studies program there.
In Summer 2018, the restoration of the original Bethlehem Steel Bridge that still stands at Glendale will be completed by the Carolina Bridge Company. The bridge will be used for pedestrians and scheduled events. For an idea of what the bridge will look like, see Kentucky’s Bowling Green bridge restoration project.
