Hurricane Rafael meanders, another area with a chance to develop

Hurricane Rafael meanders over the Gulf of Mexico, traveling to the west. Rafael landed in western Cuba on Wednesday afternoon as a category 3 hurricane. At landfall, the hurricane has maximum sustained winds of at least 115 mph, leaving the island without power again. Once it entered the Gulf of Mexico, Rafael made a westward turn, and it is not expected to land in the U.S.

43 monkeys escape from a South Carolina medical lab. Police say there is no serious danger

Forty-three monkeys escaped from a compound used for medical research in South Carolina but the nearby police chief said there is "almost no danger" to the public.

Republicans rack up another good election night in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Just like the 12 other elections this century, it was a good night for Republicans in South Carolina. The GOP continues to gain seats almost 25 years after taking control of nearly the entire state government. On Tuesday, they did not lose a single incumbent and likely added four Senate seats to have a 34-12 advantage in the chamber. Democrats had a 14-seat lead back in 1992.

One pass, two fails for school bond measures in upper Midlands counties

York County voters Tuesday passed a $90 million bond referendum to build a new middle school and perform upgrades to a learning center in York County School District 1, in York.
Voters in three counties saw dueling signs regarding their school district's proposed bond referendums. They split on which to approve and which to deny.
