In 2001, a group of opera enthusiasts got together and formed The Palmetto Opera with the mission of presenting professional opera to the Midlands and South Carolina. The official debut of Palmetto Opera came in 2003, with the performance of “Love, Murder & Revenge.” Since then, the number of performances has grown.
"Opera is a wonderful, important art form. It brings together drama and singing, and chorus, and an orchestra, and the set, so it has many different aspects," says Dr. Diane Amos. She's chair of the music program and assistant professor at Columbia College. She also performs locally for The Palmetto Opera.
The Palmetto Opera’s goal is to expand the range of ages that experience opera. The Palmetto Opera is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, incorporated in South Carolina.
