SCETV Producer Betsy Newman Honored

Betsy Newman

Betsy Newman, an award-winning documentary and web content producer at SCETV, has been awarded the Governor’s Award in the Humanities today, presented by SC Humanities. The award recognizes outstanding achievments in humanities research, helping South Carolinian communities understand their cultural heritage related to the humanities, and bringing South Carolina's cultural life to the world. Focusing on history and culture, Newman has produced 12 documentaries about the Palmetto State.

She is currently the project director of Between the Waters, a virtual tour/interactive website about Hobcaw Barony, funded by the NEH and SC  Humanities. She has been nominated for two Emmy Awards and is the recipient of a CINE Golden Eagle. Her documentary The Education of Harvey Gantt was screened in July 2016 at the March on Washington Film Festival at the National Museum of American History. 


Activist and filmaker, Charles T. "Bud" Ferillo, Jr. was also honored today as well as John S. Rainey, an attorney and past president of the ETV Endowment, who was posthumously honored . He was the executive producer of several documentary films, including Corridor of Shame and the  South Carolinians in WWII series.
