Heavy rain is expected over several days across the state, with the higher accumulations expected in the upstate regions, generally west of I-85. Warmer air into the 60s has moved as far north as the Appalachian mountains as a warm front, while at the same time, Deep moist flow is streaming into the state prompting rounds of rain with embedded thunder.
The cumulative impact of the rains over multiple days will lead to significant accumulations of rainfall, with some locations likely totaling over 4 inches by Saturday. With the repeated rounds of rain, the soils are likely to become quickly saturated and no longer capable of holding additional rain.
The Weather Prediction Center has placed the Upstate in a SLIGHT risk for flash flooding today, and in the lesser MARGINAL category for Friday and Saturday. With the warmer air in place and potential for thunderstorms, rainfall rates will be locally higher. Particularly concerning is the possibility of training thunderstorms, where thunderstorms keep moving through the same areas. Rain will move out of the area late Saturday night into early Sunday morning as a cold front moves into our area.
