South Carolina is home to thriving businesses and more people working than ever before, representing a wide range of jobs. With so many pathways and opportunities, jobseekers may not be familiar with all the available careers or how to connect with them.
Over the summer, the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW) announced Explore SC@Work! This new career exploration campaign shines a spotlight on hundreds of different jobs across numerous industries available right here in the Palmetto State.
Showcasing a variety of occupations – ranging from more commonly known ones, like an accountant, to more technical positions, such as a tire technician – Explore SC@Work invites residents of all ages to take a closer look at the many opportunities South Carolina has to offer and what each job entails.
For each featured occupation, Explore SC@Work answers questions, like:
- What kind of skills are needed for this job, and what are the typical duties like?
- How much money can I expect to make?
- What kind of education or credentials do I need?
- How much experience or training does the job require?
- And more!
Through the campaign, South Carolinians – including K-12 students and their parents – will be more aware when making decisions about their career aspirations, as well as have a better understanding of the vast array of occupations they can pursue.
With its initial launch, more than two dozen occupations are featured on the Explore SC@Work webpage at dew.sc.gov/explore with more added each week and highlighted on DEW’s social media platforms. On the website, individuals can explore a gallery of careers that are filled with details about each job, along with printable PDF flyers mirroring the same information.
With back-to-school season in mind, the Explore SC@Work gallery is a great resource for rising high school juniors and seniors as they prepare for their next steps after high school. DEW is also in the process of developing Explore SC@Work in School, which will include tailored age-appropriate materials, such as a coloring book for second graders, that will be available to South Carolina schools later this year.
As the campaign continues to evolve, more jobs and additional campaign materials, including a booklet, videos, and career pathways sheets, will be added to the Explore SC@Work webpage, so be sure to check back frequently!
Have an occupation in mind that should be featured? Email your suggestion to explore@dew.sc.gov, and you may see it in a future update.
