A WhatWorksSC Award Candidate: Reach Out and Read Carolinas
Monday - December 09, 2013
Reach Out and Read is a nationally recognized program that has received plaudits for it effectiveness with young children. Partnerships are the cornerstone of Reach Out and Read’s model. Its most important partnership is with medical providers and is the cornerstone of the entire program model: it is also the primary reason that the program is so strongly evidence-based and scalable. In the Palmetto State the program works closely with 120+ health centers, clinics, and hospitals in to ensure that our families consistently receive literacy guidance and books during regular checkups. Among the many research findings are that parents served by Reach Out and Read are up to four times more likely to read aloud to their children and during the preschool years, children served by Reach Out and Read score three to six months ahead of their non-Reach Out and Read peers on vocabulary tests. It's a great program! Learn more about it on this edition of Speaking of Schools!
