York County Comprehensive High School
Fall 2013 Crew with John Spratt
A mentor from South Carolina ETV spent 20.5 hours with 18 students at York Comprehensive High School (York CHS) from October to December of 2013. This was a coordinated project with PBS NewsHour and their Student Journalist Labs to assist schools in teaching broadcasting courses. The primary goal of this PBS initiative is to develop and inspire the next generation of journalists.
The broadcast curriculum at York Comprehensive faced serious funding challenges. This created a genuine shortfall and inequity in equipment that was readily available to students in other programs in the region. ETV Carolina’s direct activities included assisting students with story development, scripting and production values. In an effort to improve the student’s outcomes ETV provided York CHS access to equipment to alleviate their existing technical shortcomings. This extended to the mentor assisting students on local field productions using ETV’s equipment. Partly as a result of ETV's partnership with this curriculum, the school's administration has significantly increased funding for the program and has added an additional course for the coming school year.
ETV Carolina’s staff looks forward to continuing this community and educational partnership in York County.
