Lexington 4 Literacy Project Made Possible Through Partnership
Since the spring of 2012, ETV has partnered with Lexington 4 through a project funded by the Knight Foundation Fund of the Central Carolina Community Foundation. The goal of the partnership is to support reading on grade level by third grade, reducing the summer slide and providing excellent outreach and educational literacy resources for students, teachers and parents. ETV’s mascot, Smart Cat, has championed the Lexington 4 literacy effort with parent and community groups, and the project provided 40 scholarships for the Lexington 4 Early Childhood Center staff and selected civic and congregational groups to participate in PBS TeacherLine early literacy course.
Throughout the year, ETV has reached out to Lexington 4’s community partner and parent groups to inform them of services that are available through ETV and PBS. This past summer, one of the congregations in the community offered a summer reading camp, using the PBS Super Why Summer Reading Camp for children. The project reached students completing first grade who needed the most assistance with reading.
The district is committed to improving literacy and providing their staff with the literacy skills that are needed to be effective. The PBS TeacherLine courses offered by ETV this spring provided personalized learning with flexible anytime/anywhere learning and creative use of technology, customized for the youngest learners. Teachers were able to incorporate many PBS online games and mobile applications. The students loved the interaction and were engaged in specific programs created and proven to develop literacy skills.
SCETV has been proud to partner with the Lexington 4 Early Childhood Center to support a learning environment that nurtures the whole child, while building a partnership with families and the community.
