Social Determinants of Health

We sometimes overlook the simple, everyday circumstances that determine our health.  Poverty, where we live, education, access to healthcare, the food we eat, the water we drink, and the air we breathe – all of these and other so-called “social determinants” play a huge role in our health. Watch the programs online below:

About Social Determinants of Health

In Our Nation's Health: A Focus on Social Determinants, moderator John King of CNN and expert panelists examine the wide-ranging impacts of social determinants on Americans' health and our nation's healthcare model. Topics include the connection between social determinants and health; how addressing seemingly everyday social and environmental issues can have a positive impact on health; programs that have a positive impact on health status and outcomes; and the potential for incorporating a better understanding of social determinants into a healthcare system that recognizes the benefits of proactive "well-care" as opposed to symptom-based sick care.

The program includes illustrative pre-produced segments on the impacts of poverty and zip code on health, access to healthcare and resources that impact our health, and innovative approaches involving community-based programs.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR: John King is a native of Boston and earned a bachelor's degree in journalism, as well as an honorary doctorate, from the University of Rhode Island. King joined CNN in May 1997 and became chief national correspondent in April 2005. He is the former anchor of John King, USA and State of the Union with John King.

ZIP Code: Your Neighborhood, Your Health talks to one young woman living with type 2 diabetes and the affect that's had on her life. The program investigates "food deserts," places where buying healthy food is expensive and difficult, in North Charleston, S.C. and East Baltimore, M.D. "ZIP Code" then visits East Baltimore for a look at efforts that are transforming the city's health and the agents of change behind these improvements.
