Extended Interviews On Sex Education Bill

Sex Education in S.C. is under review.

The Comprehensive Health Act was passed in the late 1980s mandating that sex education be taught in public schools in South Carolina. This session, a new bill amending the sex education practices in the state was put forth in the House, where it passed quickly. The bill looks to update the current sex education, mandating clear, accurate and up-to-date medical information. The bill was stalled in the Senate when Republican Sen. Mike Fair of Greenville put an objection on the legislation.

Changes to S.C. Teen Health Face Objection

Two bills dealing with teen health have stalled in the Senate after a speedy passage in the House. The two bills, one that would amend the current Comprehensive Health Education law and the Cervical Cancer Prevention bill, had objections placed on them by two Upstate Senators, Mike Fair and Lee Bright. 

Fort Mill High School Student Featured on a National TV Series

Since seventh grade, Lexi Dressing has been tackling gender stereotypes as the only girl on her school football team. Now a junior, Lexi is the kicker for Nation Ford High School’s varsity team.

Lexi’s story was featured on the PBS series, Outside the Box. PBS Student Reporting Labs across the country were challenged to profile young people breaking down stereotypes. The story was produced by Sydney Miller, a junior at Fort Mill High School in Fort Mill.

Youth Leadership Academy Facilitators Needed

Coastal Carolina University Youth Leadership Academy

For the ninth year the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, along with the Jefferson Awards Foundation and Leadership Grand Strand, will be holding the annual Youth Leadership Academy on March 7 from 8:30 am-2 pm at Coastal Carolina University.  Students will participate in hands on activities to help them build their leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.
