ETV Carolinas Hosts Science Bowl

The sound of buzzers fills ETV Carolinas’ Studio. Elementary school children anxiously chat amongst themselves, trying to decide on a correct answer, before having their team captain say it out loud. This is because, as Science Instructional Specialist of Rock Hill Schools Kimberly Massey says, “March Madness in Rock Hill means Science Bowl.” And, this March, ETV Carolinas is hosting the Rock Hill School District 3 Elementary School Science Bowl.

Legacy Charter Students Using a DSLR

High school students bustled around their DSLR cameras, taking turns looking through the preview monitors and wondering out-loud questions like, “Why does it look so dark?” and “So, do I adjust the ISO or aperture first?” With hands-on experience, along with the suggestions of their peers (and the help of their instructors), these students were able to figure out the answers to these questions and discover the ins and outs of DSLR manual settings.

The smell of gunfire filled the air as rifles fired between Revolutionary War militia and British regulars in the woods at Historic Brattonsville last Saturday. 

Perfect weather greeted the SCETV crew from Spartanburg and Columbia for their final location day for the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution project.  Reenactors from South and North Carolina came to Historic Brattonsville  to recreate several key scenes related to Kings Mountain and other stories of the Southern Campaign.

It is a brisk day in Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina, as Robert Ryals adds the finishing touches to his Revolutionary War Continental Soldier ensemble. He slings his Continental Soldier cartridge box over his shoulder, adjusts his microphone, and he is ready to begin. Robert Ryals is the tour guide and co-owner of Walkin' Talkin' Tours, which he owns with his wife, Sharon Ryals.

To examine the experiences of immigrants in the U.S., Student Reporting Labs asked students to find stories in their own community that reflect the diversity that makes this country great. This created the #NewAmericans series, which focuses on the stories of immigration, identity and community through the eyes of teenagers.

In the #NewAmerican series, Karol Rodriguez found his place after coming to the U.S. from Cuba, thanks in part to the mentorship of someone who had done the same.  

Living History at Historic Brattonsville

Historic Brattonsville is a 775-acre Revolutionary War site located in York County, South Carolina. It is the site of the Bratton Plantation, which was owned by the Bratton family. The Bratton family came to North America in the early 18th century and ended up settling in present-day York County in 1766. The Historic Brattonsville site now consists of original buildings as well as reconstructed buildings, which were made and decorated to reflect the historical influences of the time.

Student Reporting Labs: A Trip to Charlotte, NC

America is “the land of the free.” But, what does “free” actually mean? For people who have only lived in America, it may be hard to grasp what freedom is because they have never experienced the alternative. To truly understand ‘freedom’, perspective needs to come from someone who has immigrated to America from a country that may not be so free.
