EOC Seeking Teacher Comments about Computer Science by March 10
The Education Oversight Committee (EOC) is seeking teacher comments on behalf of the South Carolina General Assembly. Teachers are asked to participate in a short online survey to provide Information about their experience, training and interest level as it relates to computer science by March 10, 2017.
The practice of computer science involves using the power of computers to solve problems. Although computer science drives innovation throughout the U.S. economy, it remains relatively marginalized throughout K-12 education.
Due to efforts by students, parents, teachers, and policymakers, computer science is becoming a priority in education. Computer Science standards are currently under development for K-8 in S.C. and while certification pathways for teachers of computer science do currently exist, they are not adequate. Currently, S.C. does not certify teachers in the content area of computer science. Nationally, principals cite difficulty recruiting trained and certified computer science teachers as a significant barrier in providing computer science courses to students.
At the request of members of the SC General Assembly, the EOC is gathering information from teachers about their experience, training and interest level as it relates to computer science. No individual information will be collected or reported and no question is mandatory. Please respond by March 10, 2017.
The survey, which consists of three Yes/No questions, can be found online here.
